One of the elements of the system was a prototype diskette. Which had a diameter of 8 inches and contained 80 kilobytes of information. However, this format was too large for general use. So in 1971 a floppy disk with a diameter of 5.25 inches and a capacity of 160 kilobytes was developed.

In the following decades, the floppy disk became one of the most common means of data storage. Particularly in IBM PC computers, which became the standard in their class. In 1984 Sony introduced its own floppy disk format – 3.5 inches with a capacity of 720 kilobytes. Which entered the market under the name “Microfloppy”. At this time, computer games and programs also began to be distributed via floppy disks.

Over the following years, the floppy disk was gradually supplanted by other means of data storage, such as CDs, DVDs, and USB drives.
