In 1996, the search engine AltaVista was launched by Digital Equipment Corporation. AltaVista stood out from previous search engines because it used automated indexing and allowed users to search for keywords within the content of web pages. AltaVista became the most popular search engine of its time and attracted a large number of users.
Later, other search engines emerged. Google was launched in 1998 and became the most popular and effective search engine in the history of the internet.
